  148. DETAILED PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
  149.  
  150. The HP 27286A Router is a 4 port (1 Ethernet/802.3, 1 Token/802.5
  151. port, 2 Synchronous Ports), high-performance, multiprotocol router and
  152. bridge.  The hardware and hardware-specific firmware is developed by
  153. HP Roseville.  Processing is handled by a Motorola 68020 running at
  154. 25MHz.  The Ethernet LAN (Sonic) and WAN (SGS-Thompson MK5025)
  155. interface chips are the same as those used in the HP 28674A Remote
  156. Bridge.  The Token Ring LAN (TI TMS380C16/04) chip is the same chip
  157. used on the Token Ring interface cards for the HP27270A.  It is
  158. packaged in an SCP (single communications processor) enclosure similar
  159. to the latest ICF bridge and hub product packaging.  Additionally, 4MB
  160. of on board DRAM is available as buffer space; 1.5MB of Flash EEPROM
  161. stores the routing and bridging firmware.  Flash EEPROM technology
  162. allows update/upgrade of this firmware via the console port or network
  163. interfaces, without physical access to the router pc assemblies.
  164.  
  165. Functionally the HP 27286A Router is equivalent to other HP Routers in
  166. terms of routing and bridging capabilities, it is a non-scaleable,
  167. low-end addition to the ICF router product family. It can
  168. transparently connect several local or geographically dispersed
  169. networks forming a "internetwork" or network of networks. The ability
  170. to operate concurrently as a router and a spanning tree bridge allows
  171. the HP Router to support multivendor networks that use a variety of
  172. protocols and media.
  173.  
  174. Most of the firmware is a technology transfer from Wellfleet
  175. Communications, Inc. and is functionally equivalent to the software
  176. products available for other HP Routers, ie. it supports the same
  177. routing, bridging and management functions.
  178.  
  179. The HP Router products support the following WAN interfaces:

  185. Routing protocols supported include:
  186.     - Internet Protocol (IP) (Supports NS and ARPA Services)

  189.     - X.25 (CCITT 1984 recommendation)
  190.     - Frame Relay (Supporting RFC 1294, RFC 1293, RFC 1315)

  194.     - Learning Bridge with Spanning Tree Protocol (technically, this
  195.       is a bridging function rather than routing protocol but is
  196.       included for completeness).
  197.     - ISDN terminal adapter, supporting v.25 bis.

  199. The HP OpenView Interconect Manager 300/400 (27630A) and Interconect
  200. Manager 600/800 (27631A) provide TCP/IP network management
  201. functionality on HP 9000 systems for managing all HP Routers.
  202. Currently available, they include the capability to manage non-IP
  203. protocols (eg.  DECnet, IPX, AppleTalk, etc.) and a graphic
  204. configuration editor.
  205.  
  206. The HP Router can route and bridge packets concurrently and provide
  207. internetworking among multi-vendor, multi-protocol Local Area Networks
  208. (LANs). Both LAN to LAN and LAN to Wide Area Network (WAN)
  209. communication are provided within a single system.  Standard protocols
  210. like TCP/IP, DECnet, and X.25 are routed while other protocols, eg. HP
  211. DTC 1.0 and DEC LAT, are bridged.  Currently the HP 27286A does not
  212. support bridging from LAN to Token ring.
  213.  
  214. The HP Router will first try to route a packet if it supports the
  215. packet's network layer protocol, (IP, XNS, DECnet, etc.).  If it does
  216. not support the packet's network layer protocol, then the packets will
  217. be bridged.  The ability to route as well as bridge packets gives the
  218. versatility to the HP Routers to support networks with varied
  219. protocols.
  220.  
  221. For routing, The HP Router operates at the network layer and selects
  222. one of potentially many paths to forward a packet based on a variety
  223. of parameters including delay, hop count, cost and link congestion.
  224. The ability to accommodate meshed topologies and to support redundant
  225. links makes it very suitable for large LAN/WAN networks.  The HP
  226. Router provides subnet isolation to clearly delineate administrative
  227. boundaries.  This allows network managers to localize problems and
  228. easily administer large, heavily used networks.
